The life story of UMUDDER’s President Halit Eryiğit:  a success story of a village child.

His story begins in 1968 in Çorum,  a village in Central Anatolia, where he opened his eyes to the world in a scarce but honorable house like his siblings. When he reached the middle school age he became a shepherd. For five full years, between the ages of 12 and 17, he took well care of the animals in the prairie grass. When the village you live in is small your dreams are big. So he went after his dreams, that would set him to move from a remote corner of Anatolia in Turkey. He was determined and hard-working. The child has set goals for himself and he struggled with difficulties, however he did not give up. He made his first step in industrialization in Kırıkkale where at the age of 17 he started to work as an apprentice. There, he quickly realized his business and developed it to found Eryiğit Industrial Machinery and Medical Devices Company in 1991. This was the first brick in a solid wall and soon that wall emerged  to become a big building and one of Turkey’s leading companies in a short time.  From a shepherd into an apprentice  to  overcome his master. He was an industrialist and as industrialist, he set a mission to himself; a mission to change something unfortunately for too long neglected in our country: he gave crucial importance to Research-Development (R & D) while TUBITAK and KOSGEB supported his projects. Therefore, he followed the technological developments both at home and abroad and took over 50 technical courses. As an active actor in the sector, he has signed dozens of projects jointly with civil society organizations, universities and public institutions

Halit Eryiğit and Substance Addiction Struggle

Life story is short. After shepherding in a small village of Anatolian apprenticeship and finally employing the people that provide employment to the other people. He is an industrialist who has come out of the country with his trademark and signed the works at international scale. There are two simple reasons for this addiction problem. First, drug addiction is an international problem that shakes the World and threatens our future. The danger is now on our street, our school and also in our house. In such a ‘national’ case, he can not be as insensitive as a person who loves his country. Belief, conscience and social responsibility are the engine of doing such things like that . The second one is based on a more specific reason. Halit Eryigit is a substance addicted victim. He was attacked by 4 substance addicts in 2015. He saved hardly his life from the hands of the addicts. Four addicts sought for various crimes were sentenced to 15 years. Halit Eryiğit, who changed the neighborhood where he stayed because of this incidents, was seized and attacked in the Çukurambar neighborhood, which could be considered as the center of Ankara. The addicts were arrested and again 15 years in prison. Halit Eryiğit and his family were deeply involved in the two incidents. The addicts had a common characteristic. All of them were young people between the ages of 17-25. We had a social problem. Eryiğit, who is looking for a solution at the same time, is very sorry for the incident and focused on the subject. Substance abuse, including the aggressors’ families, has been passed on, focusing on how young people are being dragged into this path and what needs to be done. Soon the civil society started to work with the association established under the name UMUD Association and started its activities Cankiri, Çorum, Konya, Ankara and Aksaray. Halit Eryiğit, the founder of the UMUD Association, which was founded in 2016, served as the General Secretary in 2007-2008, and a member of the Board in 2010-2011. As the work intensified, it became clear that it has a complicated and international dimension beyond the predictions of substance abuse problem. The incident has neither a health nor a security problem. It was not easy to reach a solution without addressing social, psychological, economic, security, global dimensions. In the light of the experiences gained, a new structure was required. On top of that, Halit Eryiğit and his colleagues sought to establish a non-governmental organization with international supremacy.

As a first in Turkey to be able to operate on an international level so UMUDDER (International Association Against Substance Abuse) established as a domestic and opened the front of being able to be effectively fight outside.
